Our expertise Specialized knowledge across the Ethereum landscape

Go to the next section

DeFi

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is a permissionless alternative to the current financial system, offering access to global markets to anyone with an internet connection.
Most existing financial instruments are replicated and improved on in DeFi, and there are also opportunities to build brand new financial products. We are delivering tools for blockchain protocol trading to Oiler.Network, who are brining blockchain native derivatives to the markets.

Ethereum Protocol Engineering

Protocol engineers, maintaining a secure network with accurate data, are key to the health and decentralization of the entire Ethereum network.
The Nethermind Ethereum client is run by Gnosis Chain, Energy Web and Dark Forest, amongst other prominent protocols. As such, it is contributing to improving client diversity on Ethereum. Our robust client is built for performance and versatility, with a modular approach which supports custom plugins.

L2 Research

Layer 2 (L2) are scaling solutions which increase transaction speed and throughput on Ethereum, and as such, are a crucial step towards mass adoption.
One of the most promising and cutting edge L2s is the StarkNet zero-knowlege rollup by StarkWare. Our partnership with StarkWare has produced Warp, which brings Solidity smart contract compatibility to StarkNet, and Voyager blockexplorer, which displays all cross-chain messages in one place.

MEV Solutions

Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) is the value that can be extracted by miners or validators from their ability to reorder, insert and censor transaction within blocks.
Competition for MEV opportunities ultimately cause security instability of the entire network, which chips away at the core values of Ethereum: neutrality, transparency and decentralisation. We have contributed with research and development to Flashbots solutions, built to mitigate the negative effects of MEV extraction techniques.

Smart Contracts Development

In 1996, Nick Szabo defines smart contracts as “a set of promises, specified in digital form”. Today, these self-executing contracts make up the building blocks of Decentralized Finance.
We work closely with project teams to help at any stage of development. Besides developing smart contracts in Solidity (Oiler.Network), we are also involved in multiple Cairo based projects for StarkNet.

Security Audits & Monitoring

Blockchain technology has triggered a transfer of trust - from human intermediaries to smart contracts and the underlying code. Security scripts and rigorous audits are crucial in maintaining this trust.
Our Solidity specialists use advanced tools to analyse contracts and to identify security weaknesses before they become exploitable. Nethermind was one of the first community members to become an agent developer for the Forta project - the first decentralized security protocol for smart contracts.

Formal Verification

Given the amount of value carried by Ethereum, having total certainty of the correctness of protocols, tools and smart contracts is essential. Formal verification can guarantee a large array of properties in the Ethereum ecosystem.
We are working towards formally specifying and verifying all parts of the Ethereum network. To learn more, read our fully open source, formal specification of the Yul Intermediate Representation in Lean.
